Self esteem is defined as:

“Confidence in one’s own worth and abilities.”

I’ve always thought of it as something that needs to be built. It requires strong foundations, bricks, cement, and heavy-lifting.

In short, having it is tough work.

Self esteem has never felt to me like something that can be hacked. I didn’t think there was a shortcut. I also believed that after the hard work of building it from the ground up, it would always be there — standing tall against any storms that hit.

As a result of this belief, over the last three years I’ve delved into ‘doing the work’ — trying to build confidence, focussing on affirmations and visualisations as the building blocks of self esteem.

I’ve found some of this really useful. Digging into your behaviours and analysing your beliefs is a good exercise for anyone to undertake. But none of these activities transformed my self esteem.

Start with self trust
